If there is one floating plant that instantly transforms an aquarium into a miniature natural pond, it is Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum). With its bright green, heart-shaped leaves and long, elegant roots trailing beneath the surface, this beautiful plant creates a peaceful atmosphere while providing numerous benefits for both fish and shrimp. It is no surprise that Amazon Frogbit has become one of the most popular floating plants among freshwater aquarium enthusiasts.

When I first introduced Amazon Frogbit to my aquarium, I was immediately impressed by its appearance. Under my Aquael Day & Night lighting, the leaves develop a fascinating glow. During the evening “Night” mode, the subtle blue light reflects from the smooth leaf surface, giving the plant an almost magical appearance. It creates a calm and natural mood that completely changes the character of the aquarium after dark.

One of the most remarkable qualities of Amazon Frogbit is how quickly it adapts to a new environment. Within just a day of placing it into the aquarium, I noticed the first signs of new growth. Healthy plants often begin producing small daughter plants connected by short runners, allowing them to spread naturally across the water surface. Watching this process is fascinating, and it quickly becomes clear why this species is considered such an easy and rewarding plant to grow.

Amazon Frogbit originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. In nature it grows in slow-moving rivers, ponds, marshes and flooded forests where it floats freely on calm water. These natural conditions explain why the plant performs best in aquariums with gentle water movement. Strong currents can constantly wet the leaves, which may eventually damage them. A calm surface allows the leaves to remain dry while the long roots develop freely beneath the water.

One of the most attractive features of Amazon Frogbit is its root system. Healthy plants can produce roots that extend well over 20 centimetres into the water column. These roots create a natural underwater forest where shrimp can graze on microscopic organisms and small fish can find shelter. Bettas, in particular, often enjoy resting beneath the floating leaves or weaving through the hanging roots.

Besides its beauty, Amazon Frogbit also performs valuable work inside the aquarium. Like many floating plants, it absorbs nutrients directly from the water. By taking up nitrate and phosphate, it helps improve water quality and may reduce the growth of unwanted algae. This makes it especially useful in newly established aquariums, where maintaining a healthy biological balance is particularly important.

Fortunately, the plant requires very little special care. Moderate to bright lighting is usually sufficient, and additional carbon dioxide injection is unnecessary. A regular aquarium fertiliser containing trace elements, especially iron, helps maintain healthy green leaves if nutrient levels become depleted. The plant thrives in temperatures between approximately 18 and 30 °C, making it suitable for the vast majority of tropical freshwater aquariums.

Its rapid growth does mean that occasional maintenance is necessary. Left completely unchecked, Amazon Frogbit can eventually cover nearly the entire water surface. While this creates a beautiful natural appearance, it may reduce light reaching plants below and limit the open surface area needed by labyrinth fish such as bettas. Fortunately, maintenance is simple: excess plants can be removed in seconds, making it easy to keep the desired amount of surface cover.

For aquarists looking for a floating plant that combines elegance, simplicity and practical benefits, Amazon Frogbit is difficult to surpass. Its vibrant green leaves, graceful roots and rapid growth make it a constantly changing feature that brings life to the aquarium every day. Whether your goal is to create a natural aquascape, provide shelter for shrimp and fish, or simply enjoy one of the most beautiful floating plants available, Limnobium laevigatum is an excellent choice that rarely disappoints.
